Design Concept

Back

Seven conceptual diagrams reveal the basic principles that guided Team Two’s design. Natural features such as slope, aspect, and hydrology became the basis for a framework that combined principles of compact, transit-oriented neighbourhoods with properties of ecological design. This concept emphasizes the circular and integrated relationship between nature and human processes.

Save Land: Use Transit
Team Two adhered to the notion that concentrated, urban neighbourhoods go hand in hand with transit. The radius of each concentrated area is approximately 400 metres and represents a comfortable walking distance from the centre to anywhere along its edge. Development outside the pedestrian-oriented development zones is minimized in order to protect and to enhance the existing ecological fabric.

Denser at the Centre
The central transit stop at Lougheed Highway and Willingdon Avenue is seen as a locus for activity and high-density development. Here, transit infrastructure and high urban amenity become mutually supportive.
